Easing Back Into Fitness

RISE by Studio PP Founder and Director Steph Prem is a former Olympian, personal trainer and wellness expert. We spoke to Steph about her tips for getting back into your health routine post a tough 2020.

While on paper the end of lockdown was an incredibly positive change, for many, feelings of stress and anxiety remain high, and motivation remains low. The reality of coming out of isolation has hit home, and the previous ‘lack of routine and accountability’ excuse is fading.

I have been speaking with many people who are still patiently waiting to feel inspired, or for the motivation to simply ‘turn up.’ Sadly, that’s just not how it works. Motivation is fleeting and unreliable. We all need routine and discipline more than ever to get us – and keep us – on track.

I say to all my clients; “start where you are, and be ok with that!” One of the best things you can do is resist the urge to compare yourself to others. Your health journey needs to be for you.

We’re all in a place of discomfort, navigating this unprecedented time together. With working from home becoming the new normal, fostering and being accountable for a healthy lifestyle requires habit. Practicing mindfulness, proper nutrition, sufficient sleep, regular exercise and hydration each day can strengthen your body to adapt and better manage stress and overwhelm. To stay on track, try making simple changes such as:

  • Set goals and intentions for all facets of your wellbeing, not just your physical health. Ensure you are focusing on your mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing too.
  • Consistency beats intensity every time. Implement regular, manageable habits which have a positive impact on your wellbeing. Accountability and routine are two of the biggest steps in taking ownership of your health. People usually see amazing results with a regular routine regardless of their level of motivation – commit to it and trust the process!
  • Focus on long-term personal performance, not just superficial short-term gains. We all love a quick fix, but if it’s unsustainable, it won’t stick.
  • Finally, be kind to yourself. If being hard on yourself worked, it would have worked by now!
