With an acute understanding of movement and specialist knowledge in pre-and post-natal Pilates, Aislinn Butler’s extensive background as a full-time ballet dancer places her amongst some of the top Pilates instructors in Australia.
We spoke to Aislinn (Ash, for short) about health, wellness, and her journey to joining the team at 101 Collins’ RISE by Studio PP.
How did find yourself working in wellness?
I began practicing Pilates at the age of 10, whilst undertaking extensive ballet training. When I retired from dancing in my mid-20s, Pilates and barre instructing felt like a natural career progression, both personally and professionally.
What has been your journey to get to where you are now professionally?
I have been teaching for more than 8 years across many different studios and modalities. Over the course of those 8 years, I continued to study and adapt my teaching to incorporate a holistic understanding of all I have learnt – allowing me to provide a well-rounded and up-to-date training for my clients.
What is one wellness myth you wish could be debunked?
‘You can spot train fat’. While you can target a certain muscle group to increase its size and strength, you unfortunately cannot burn fat from a specific area.
What is one thing you wish more people knew about wellness?
Body awareness! I think it is a very important skill to understand the difference between muscle soreness from a good workout, and muscles soreness because of injury. Likewise, the difference between good pain and bad pain, or a safe stretch and over-extending is a fine line. Listening to your body and understanding these things can really help you progress (and prevent injury).
Why is an investment in workplace wellness so important?
We all know the obvious reasons – reducing stress, depression and risk of health complications while increasing vitality, self-satisfaction, and productivity.
However, having easy access to state-of-the-art facilities onsite takes this one step further – it is such a gift to the hardworking tenants of 101 Collins, and is an investment that makes looking after yourself a much more achievable pursuit.
What is your personal health and wellbeing philosophy?
You’re only one work out away from a good mood.
What is your self-isolation wellness ‘’hack’’?
Routine! Make sure to implement (and stick to) structure throughout the day. With this also comes ensuring you are taking regular breaks at set times and minimising distractions (hello social media, TV, and personal calls).
