We spoke to Lou about health, wellness, and her journey to joining the team at 101 Collins’ RISE by Studio PP.
How did you find yourself working in Yoga?
My mother was always very interested in Yoga, so my introduction to the practice began from an early age. At the time, Yoga wasn’t as mainstream as it is now. In saying this, I didn’t commence regular practice until I found myself studying abroad in Hong Kong, living in a very small space.
At that time, I was feeling very anxious and out of my depth – I knew I needed something that was going to provide some peace and clarity to my life. I sought out a Yoga studio and started going every day. I immediately noticed a difference in my mental state, and to this day I’ve never looked back.
What has been your journey to get to where you are now professionally?
I completed my first Yoga teacher training five years ago. Since then, I have completed at least one training per year – there is no end to learning in Yoga, which I love.
What is one wellness myth you wish could be debunked?
I don’t agree with people bragging about how little sleep they can live off! While we can function with compromised sleep for some time, it does eventually catch up with you. Sleep is medicine – we need more than we get!
What is one thing you wish more people knew about Yoga?
Ayurveda is the health science of Yoga philosophy. It’s an incredibly ancient system of health and healing, that predates Chinese Medicine, and is still relevant today. It encourages living according to the cycles and principles of nature. I wish people knew more about this! There would be a lot more balance in the world.
Why is workplace wellness so important?
Workplace wellness is incredibly important! I think the corporate world is beginning to invest in their staff as individuals, with complex lives outside of the office, and not just as a number on a page.
The workplace is a space where employees spend a lot of time, so the more nurture you receive at work, the healthier and happier you will be.
What is your personal health and wellbeing philosophy?
Get lots of sleep, don’t be afraid to say no and get as much sunlight and salt on the skin as you can. I find them both healing and detoxifying.
What is your self-isolation wellness ‘’hack’’?
Banana bread? Just kidding! I have been taking very long walks outside, daily. It’s been great exercise and the fresh air and smiles at strangers have done my soul wonders.
